What do I need to run Murmur? +
A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, or newer) running macOS 14.4 or later. We recommend 16 GB of RAM for best performance (8 GB minimum). You'll also need about 5 GB of free disk space for the AI models.
Why does the first launch take so long? +
On first launch, Murmur downloads two AI models that power the transcription and summarization. The speech model is about 150MB, and the summarization model is around 4GB. This only happens once—after that, everything runs instantly from your local storage.
Which file formats work? +
MP3, M4A, and WAV for audio. MP4 and MOV for video. If you have something else, just convert it to MP3 first—QuickTime can do this, or any online converter.
Can I record Zoom or Teams calls? +
Yes. Select 'System Audio' or 'Both' when you start recording. This captures whatever audio your Mac is playing—no browser extensions or screen sharing needed.
My microphone isn't being detected +
Head to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Murmur has permission. If you just granted it, restart the app for the change to take effect.
How do I record from the menu bar? +
Click the Murmur icon in your menu bar to start or stop recording without opening the main window. The icon turns red when recording is active.
How long is the free trial? +
Seven days with full functionality. After that, you can still open and export your existing transcriptions—you just can't create new ones without a license.
How many Macs can I use with one license? +
Up to three. If you need to move your license to a different Mac, just deactivate it first in Settings on the old one.
Where do I enter my license key? +
Open Settings (the gear icon), then click 'Enter License Key'. Enter the license key from your purchase confirmation email.
Everything happens on your Mac. Your recordings and transcripts never leave your device. We only use the internet for license checks, software updates, and downloading the AI models on first launch. Read our full privacy policy →
